The long flat-topped Bembulben mountain with its gullied sides, with a light covering of snow.

A feminist retelling of a well-known tragic love story from Irish myth.

My version of this story, generally known as Tóraíocht Dhiarmada agus Ghráinne, or ‘the Pursuit of Diarmuid and Grainne’, looks between the lines to extract the kernel of how things might have been experienced from Gráinne’s perspective.

In the standard telling, Gráinne is portrayed as a duplicitous scheming witch who will stop at nothing to get her own way. The story then ends with her sacrifice, as rather than return to Fionn after Diarmuid’s death, she throws herself under the wheels of Fionn’s chariot. Thus she redeems herself as the loyal, faithful wife.

But there is a local legend in Sligo where the couple are said to have lived that tells a different story.

This version was shared with me by the late John Wilmott of Nature Folklore, and in it, Gráinne continues to rule as a wise, benevolent and beloved Queen in her own right long after Diarmuid’s brutal end.

Of course, this tale of a powerful woman ruler does not fit with the Christian patriarchal narrative that likes women to be meek and subservient. Her tragic suicide is deemed preferable to notions of female autonomy.

But Wilmott’s story got me thinking, and suddenly, I found myself re-imagining other myths from a female perspective. It was really fun to question the status quo and read these familiar stories from a different angle. I now have a book-length manuscript of them, so let me know if you enjoyed this one, and perhaps I will share more of them with you.

Ali, I love reading the world of myth and Ireland through your eyes. I would be interested in the audio version, though. Did you send it and I missed it? Thank you! xWhitney

This story from Grainne’s POV is astonishing, Ali! Absolutely stunning. I can hardly wait to read your book on the Irish myths from a feminist’s POV. As I read this story, I called in the spirit of John Willmott and said, “See what you stimulated in Ali? A masterpiece!” Currently reading your book, “Imperfect Bodies,” a very different book. It’s a very talented writer who can so smoothly shirft from fiction to non, requiring different talents. How long have I been reading your work? At least 10 years? The quality of your writing has soared to fabulous heights. Truly. I’m so impressed and delighted.

Hi Robin, thank you so much! I hoped you would like it, and I love that you called in John to witness it. I hope he liked it too. Thank you for ordering my book, too, I really appreciate your support. Gosh, has it really been that long? We have met 3 times since then, isn’t that amazing? And still so much to see. We’ll have to do a Goddess tour next time you’re here, or maybe a sheelanagig tour!

A sheelanagig tour! Woohoo! While I have a map of where they are, I’ve only ever seen 4 of them. Can you believe that? Of course, many of them are on private property. Still, I’m up for the big adventure! And, I’d love to take a Goddess tour! I hope you’re giving private tours, sharing your amazing knowledge. In my mind, I’m thinking I’ll return next spring. Got it written down on my wish list!

Absolutely! Planning makes me almost as happy as being there. Trying to remember the name of the hotel where I stayed last time. I really liked it.

Ali, this is stunning ❤️‍🔥. I love hearing the sound of Gráinne’s voice echoing through the mists of time – truth at last. Reading it the day after Jessie Buckley won an Oscar for her performance in Hamnet, I saw Gráinne as her in the film. Thank you for this powerful retelling and reclaiming of a woman’s power.

Ah… thank you, Annette! I think only Jessie could have won the award this year. I actually haven’t seen the movie yet, but I read the book when it first came out, Conor bought it for me, and I loved it. I have always liked Maggie O’Farrell’s writing since reading her stunning memoir, I Am, I Am, I Am.thanks for reading, I’m glad you liked it! 💕

I went to see Hamnet shortly after reading I Am, I Am, I Am, and I have to agree with you: only Jessie could have won the Oscar this year ❤️‍🔥

I loved that memoir. Reading it was like a eureka moment when I understood what a memoir actually was and could do. I think I followed it with Sinead Gleeson’s Constellations, and that was it, I was hooked!

Well, I’m now deep into your memoir, Ali, and loving every word of it ! I think the memoir that did it for me was Run Towards the Danger by Canadian writer/filmmaker Sarah Polley (Jessie Buckley was in her film Women Talking a few years back).

Really loved this Ali – thank you! I also had a movie-in-my-head moment 🤗I’m definitely going to buy your book and look forward to reading it.

I had a loonnngg break from SubStack, so I didn’t know your book was being launched. Disappointed to have missed those dates. Do you have readings elsewhere coming up?

Thank you, Áine! Where are you based. I will be in UK this week, and in London in April. After that, I will see about getting a couple more Irish events, maybe Galway, Belfast. Glad you enjoyed the Gráinne story today, and thank you for your interest in IB. I hope you enjoy it! 💕

Ps… we all need a break from Substack now and again, and sm in general, I think.

I’m not usually convinced by first person pov, it often feels too limiting and introverted, but this is perfect! It’s Grainne’s story and her feelings, that most of the usual versions ignore completely.

Thanks Jane! I sometimes wonder if first pov is too YA, but it felt right in this instance.

I know what you mean. It hadn’t occurred to me before, but it’s true, so much YA is first person navel-gazing, which might explain why it’s so popular with many adults too 🙂 This is how it ought to be used. Great stuff.
